The global financial crisis stemmed from the U.S. helped the South Korean D-RAM industry to bolster its presence in the global market.
According to market researcher iSuppli on November 25, Samsung Electronics topped the global industry, commanding a 35.5 percent market share. The runner-up was Hynix Semiconductor Inc. with 21.7 percent which managed to surpass 20 percent for four consecutive months.
The aggregate market share of South Korea¡¯s D-RAM manufacturers namely Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor is 57.2 percent which surpassed the previous record of 55.8 percent set in Q2 2009.
Moreover, the market share grew by 7.9 percentage points from 49.3 percent in Q3 2009.
The two companies marked its first 50.0 percent market share in Q3 2007, but continued to remain in the 49 percent range due to a spiraling game of chicken in the semi-conductor¡¯s industry.
Japan¡¯s Elpida ranked third with a 16.9 percent market share in Q3 2009, up 0.4 percentage points compared with the previous quarter. The U.S-based Micron Technology came in fourth place whose market share declined by 1.2 percentage points to 12.7 percent.
Meanwhile, iSuppli projected this year¡¯s global semi-conductor¡¯s market to shrink by 12.4 percent ($3.2 billion) which indicates a smaller decline in sales compared with the estimate made in the beginning of the year.
